Is JK Rowling a billionaire?

JK Rowling famously went from living on benefits to being a multi-millionaire within five years.

The author has come a long way from a struggling and skint single mum who started her world-conquering Harry Potter series of novels in an Edinburgh cafe in the 90s.

Thanks to selling more than 600 million copies of the Boy Wizard series worldwide, she is a VERY wealthy woman.

JK has an estimated net worth of £1billion, and takes home a salary of around £25M a year.

Her Cormoran Strike crime fiction novels have added further to her wealth, as has the hit West End show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Despite her enormous bank balance, back in 2012 the author was famously booted off the Forbes billionaire list after donating so much to charity.

It’s believed that in that year alone she gave away £120M.

JK also made £200M from the Harry Potter film franchise.

Over the years her wealth has increased further thanks to the Pottermore website, the Harry Potter theme park, and various merchandise.

JK has been happily married to Doctor Neil Murray since 2001.

Together they have two children, David (born 2003) and Mackenzie (born 2005).

Jorge Arantes is JK Rowling’s first husband and is the father of her first daughter.

The pair met while he was a student aged 23 in Porto, Portugal.

He is a former Portuguese TV reporter but it is not clear what he does now.

JK Rowling is believed to be the world’s wealthiest author.

She is closely followed by crime writer James Patterson who has a fortune of £800M.

After him is romance novelist Danielle Steel who’s wealth stands at around £700M.

Horror writer Stephen King’s fortune is around £500M.

JK Rowling has written over 20 books and contributed to much more.

The author’s best-known work is the seven Harry Potter books, which were released between 1997 and 2007.

She has also written a number of novels relating to the Boy Wizard series including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Tales of Beedle the Bard and Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists.

Away from Harry Potter, in 2012 JK released adult novel The Casual Vacancy.

JK has also published four novels in her Cormoran Strike series under the name Robert Galbraith.
