Legendary country music artist Dolly Parton has told of her pride in Taylor Swift and Britney Spears for standing up for themselves.

Dolly, 76, heaped praise on Taylor for defending herself against Damon Albarn earlier this week, who made some rogue claims about her not writing her own songs, and Britney for her recent conservatorship battle.

Earlier this week, Blur superstar Damon, 53, criticised Taylor in an interview with the LA Times, claiming that the singer ‘doesn’t write her own songs’.

Taking to Twitter, the pop icon defended herself against the spurious allegations, saying: ‘@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f****d up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.’

Addressing the recent comments by Damon about Taylor’s songwriting, Dolly told Hollywood Life that the Shake It Off singer is a ‘great writer – with or without anybody.’

She added that it’s ‘magnificent’ that Taylor, 32, isn’t afraid to call out her detractors in public.

Dolly also waved off Damon’s claims that ‘co-writing doesn’t count’ in song craft, saying: ‘It’s not true.

‘When you co-write a song, you work just as hard. Sometimes you work harder with a co-writer because you want to be sure to do your part.

‘Rather than thinking about what I’m going to put on a record, I just write whatever is coming out right now.

‘There’s a lot to be said about co-writing.’

She then went on to talk about Britney, 40, and her conservatorship battle, which saw her finally speak out last year after 13 years locked into a guardianship that left her few freedoms, including financially.

‘I don’t like to judge other people and their problems, but when all that stuff that happens, like with Britney Spears — when they get [wrapped up in] controversy like that, you have to kind of stand up for yourself,’ the Jolene hitmaker said.

She added: ‘I really get rubbed wrong sometimes when people mistreat the artist. I don’t like that.’

Speaking further about Taylor, she added: ‘I think she’s done great’.

‘And that’s one of the things I admire about her because she’s never sold herself.

‘She’s never felt like she’s had to sell her body. She’s always had good taste in how she’s presented herself and with her songs.

‘And she’s very creative and very, very, very smart in the marketing of her life. She knows who she is and what she wants.

‘And I’m the same way. I’m going to fight if it goes against what I feel is not right for me.’
