At tonight’s 2024 Met Gala, Serena Williams once again demonstrated her dominance not only on the tennis court but also on the iconic Met stairs.
Throughout the years, the tennis icon has consistently made a statement on the first Monday in May with her memorable fashion choices.
From a striking ombré feather cape and jumpsuit in 2021 to a sleek floor-length black gown last year, Williams has consistently impressed with her Met Gala attire.
For this year’s event, Williams collaborated with Balenciaga to create a dress inspired by look 52 from the house’s 51st couture collection, which was unveiled in 2022 and drew inspiration from pieces in the Balenciaga archives.
Crafting the gown was a significant undertaking, with the atelier dedicating 150 hours to pattern-making and fashioning the couture piece from 25 meters of gold foil-laminated taffeta sourced from Italy.
Williams expresses her gratitude to Vogue for the opportunity to collaborate with the talented Balenciaga team on a dress that she describes as both memorable and glamorous. The gown features an ethereal sash that forms a train, symbolizing a collective effort to create something extraordinary, and she feels immensely proud to be its ambassador.
Styled by Kesha McLeod, Williams accessorizes the ensemble with black gloves and gold hair accessories. Adhering to the “The Garden of Time” dress code, she completes the look with an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch. Williams appreciates how the sand gold color of the watch complements her dress and admires its ability to shift tones depending on the angle and light.
For Williams, who has attended numerous high-profile events throughout her adult life, the Met Gala holds a special significance. She fondly recalls attending the event while pregnant with Olympia in 2017 and with Adira last year, both experiences holding a special place in her heart.
