‘I am not a racist’: Cardi B defends herself after describing Met Gala designer as ‘Asian’

Met Gala 2024: Carbi B, who made an appearance at Met Gala, was criticised for not naming the designer, instead calling the inspiration behind the enormous outfit, ‘Asian and everything’.

Rapper Cardi B, who won the white and green carpet at Met Gala 2024, as she arrived dressed in an enormous, jaw-dropping black outfit, was slammed for not mentioning the name of the designer behind her much-talked-about look.

While speaking with Vogue, during the appearance, instead of naming the designer, Sensen Lii of Windowsen, she responded, “Asian and everything.” This didn’t go down well with netizens as well as Vogue’s former managing director Gilbert Cheah, who slammed her in the comment section of an Instagram Reel.

“For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Lii who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian,” wrote Cheah, who is Peranakan (mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage).

The 31-year-old took to her Instagram Story to explain why she didn’t take the name of the designer who is of Chinese descent. “First and first, when I was on the red carpet, I was very scared,” Cardi B wrote, adding, “The dress was supposed to be on a little podium, and I’ve been practicing how to pose on the podium. But on the carpet, I wasn’t allowed to use the podium. So I had a lot of things in my mind, and I was being rushed to the front of the line.”

The “I Like It” hitmaker explained how she “forgot to pronounce” the designer’s name because it was “a little bit complicated.” “I was like, ‘Damn.’ How do I pronounce his name? My mind was just racing. I didn’t want to be offensive. I said ‘Asian designer’ because I knew the designer was Asian, but I wasn’t sure what nationality the designer was,” she said.

Responding to the trolling she received, the rapper reacted, “You’re trying to offend me, but you’re actually offending the people behind the scenes.” Cardi later shared a video of herself posing in the dress on her social media handles. “I have to give another thank you to Windowsen by Sensen Lii!!! I chose you because of your amazing talent and you came through really making this Met Gala a night to remember,” she captioned the Instagram Story.

Windowsen also shared a video of Cardi in the outfit and spoke about the inspiration behind the creation. “I associated fertile, Vast Black Soil with the theme — All kinds of beautiful flowers grow on the Vast Black Soil, rich earth used for planting Crops and flowers. A single black rose grows in this Vast Black Soil. The whole dress uses nearly 3000 meters of organza. It symbolises the vastness of the land,” read the post.
